Every
now and then someone comes along with an idea that seems so
easy and so obvious that you wonder why nobody thought of it
before. And that's what I think Slot Track Scenics have
achieved with the latest addition to their range of track
accessories. Safety
fencing is an obvious feature of any modern racing circuit,
but there is very little choice for those of us who wish to
add fencing to our slot tracks. I think that problem has just
been solved!

The
fencing come in 1.75 metre lengths. The fence material is
flexible plastic (originally green, the photos show it after
painting). Each kit comes with ten supports. These are made
from ABS plastic, angled at the top and have pre-formed holes
for wire stringers at the top. In other words they look neat,
professional and exactly what you'd expect to see at a modern
circuit. |
 |
Fitting
the fences is quite straight forward. If you're using a
plastic track the easiest method is to use some of the Slot
Track Scenics 'clever little clips' (see the review here). The
fencing is attached to the posts with your choice of glue or
by tying with cotton or thin wire. As mentioned, the fencing
material is flexible so it can be fitted around any radius
curve without problems (though apparently you may need
additional clips or an alternative method of attaching the
posts).

As you can see
from the photos, I've fitted the fencing around part of my
routed track. I just hot-glued the posts in place, although a
new clip designed for use with routed tracks or wooden base
boards is also available. My barriers
are quite low so I needed to shorten the fence posts, easily
achieved with a sharp knife. I also cut the fence to make a
space for a marshal, again this was easy to do as the fence
can be cut with a normal pair of scissors (much easier than
the metal fencing I've used in the past).

| At
under £6 for 1.75m of fencing including 10 fence posts, I
think these kits are great value for money and offer a lot of
flexibility whatever sort of track you're using. Extra fence
posts and clips are available separately.
I think these
fence kits will prove to be useful and popular, and will
probably make track manufacturers kick themselves for not
thinking of it first!
